The location used to be the second
station for the first railway track in Singapore which had its
first station in Tank Road. The Newton Circus is famed for its
hawker centre which is popular amongst tourists. The Newton
Hawker Centre began as temporary hawker centre built to house
hawkers relocated from Koek Road. Its site is earmarked for
residential development. Newton Circus grew into a major street
intersection with many roads converging towards it, which
creates regular traffic problems. It links Bukit Timah, Scotts
Road, Clemenceau Avenue, Newton Road, Keng Lee Road and Kampong
Java Road. Newton Circus is also an MRT train station.
It is named after Howard Newton, second municipal engineer and
a famous amateur singer. Newton had been assistant to
James MacRitchie during the 1860s.
