Pulau Sudong was originally filled with
mangrove trees and swamp. It made the headlines in 1960 when
geologists raised the alarm that the island was sinking. The
islanders, however, were unwilling to move. Just 10 years
earlier, in 1950, a former member of the Rural Board, Mr. H. J.
C. Kulasinga had mentioned the same problem. He suggested that
the islanders move to nearby Pulau Pawai but they did not heed
his warning and stayed firm on Pulau Sudong.
Variant Names
Malay Name: Pulau Sudong refers to "a beautiful
island surrounded by a coral reef". Sudong is said
to be derived from Tudong or "a cover", so
called because the shape of the island with the reef around it
is so similar to the common food cover.
