The Grove Hotel was the first hotel to be set up in the countryside in Tanjong Katong, unlike most of the hotels in  early Singapore, which were set up in the town area or its vicinity.  Tanjong Katong then was often referred to as the "Brighton" of Singapore. With its idyllic surroundings and location by the sea, the hotel could offer an ambiance and facilities that hotels in the town could not, such as setting in a grove of coconut trees, and areas for having a picnic or enjoying a hike.

History
The Grove Hotel, sometimes called the Grove Hotel and Sanatorium, was one of the two hotels in the Tanjong Katong area in the early 1900s. Set up around 1905, it was probably named after Grove Road (present Mountbatten Road) or Grove Estate. It was in operation for only a few years and soon became one of the two annexes of the Sea View Hotel and Sanatorium around 1909.

Description
Operating from a two-storey bungalow just beside the sea, the Grove Hotel was one of the principal hotels in early 20th century Singapore.  It was situated next to the sea in Tanjong Katong, near the Tramway terminal.  Then, the hotel was half an hour's drive from town.  Visitors and guests of the hotel also traveled to the hotel by horse-drawn carriage that would pass through local residential areas before reaching the rural countryside.  It was also accessible by sampan from Johnston's Pier. An advertisement in Souvenir of Singapore described the hotel as the "coolest spot on the island", "a palm-embowered hostel by the sea", and "a charming refuge from the heat, fanfare and fumes of town".  Guests could go on a picnic, or enjoy a hike.  The hotel also had telephone and bathing facilities
