Abstract:
Folk and fairy tales have always played a key role in our lives. Since childhood, children learn about fairies and sprites, wicked witches and Cinderella, Red Riding Hood and Snow White. Children’s knowledge of these tales springs mainly from their exposure to television or movies, especially Disney shows. The aim of this series of NLB's annotated bibliographies is to highlight the richness of Asian tales that exist in the library’s collections and how they too can take the forefront in our children’s lives, whereupon children become familiar with these tales as well as they would the Grimm Brothers’ tales or Charles Perrault’s tales. This compilation of folk tales from Malaysia includes single folk tales as well as an anthology of works by various noted authors. The tales presented here are good for solitary reading, reading aloud and telling to a bigger audience.
