Abstract:
The recorded history of Italian art goes back many centuries, beginning with the ancient Etruscans (ca 8th century B.C.) and later the Roman Empire, followed by the influence of the early Christian Church and Gothic styles. A pivotal period in Western art history is the Renaissance (late 14th to early 17th centuries A.D.). The artists and architects of the Italian Renaissance in particular are well known throughout the world and vastly influential even to the present day. From this era came Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael, amongst many others. Italian art continued to thrive in subsequent centuries, in the sculpture and architectural ornamentation of the Baroque to the Modern works of artists such as Amedeo Modigliani and Giorgio de Chirico.
