Abstract:
This guide gathers together a collection of resources on the emergence of the "modern" as well as the state of contemporary art in Southeast Asia. By exploring these resources, the reader can draw out the common threads of this evolution across a culturally diverse region, and at the same time explore why styles diverge on national levels and how they become unique and personal to the artist. Included in this guide are materials from the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library's print, audio-visual and digital collections, primarily in English, covering the art of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Most resources focus on painting, as this has been the most prolific medium in Southeast Asia throughout the 20th century.
